A former student who opened fire at an Illinois high school Wednesday
morning was arrested after a school resource officer injured him in a
gunfire exchange, ultimately preventing what could have been a violent
attack.

Students were gathered in the gymnasium at Dixon High School to rehearse
for their upcoming graduation when Officer Mark Dallas confronted the
gunman around 8 a.m, City manager Danny Langloss said. The suspect shot at
him, preliminary investigations show, prompting the officer to return
fire.

The gunman was struck in the confrontation and taken into custody and is
currently receiving medical treatment. His injuries appear to be non-life
threatening, according to the statement.

Lee County Sheriff John Simonton told Sauk Valley Media the suspect is a
19-year-old former student at the school.

The officer believed to have stopped the attack escaped the incident
without injury and no students or staff were wounded in the Wednesday
morning shooting.

"Today, we should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark
Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a dangerous
situation at Dixon High School," Gov. Bruce Rauner tweeted.

Authorities believe the gunman acted alone and that there is no further
threat to the community, according to a press release from Langloss.

Still, all public schools in Dixon, located about 80 miles from Chicago,
were put on lockdown following the incident so authorities may continue to
investigate.

Dixon High School students were being bused to the baseball fields in Page
Park, where they may be picked up by parents.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who was briefed on the situation by Simonton, praised
the quick response by authorities.

"As we continue to gather more information about the shooting incident at
Dixon High School this morning, I extend my deepest gratitude to the Dixon
Police Department, and especially the School Resource Officer on-site for
their swift action today in keeping our students, teachers and community
safe," he said in a statement.

Ahead of the incident Wednesday, there had been 21 school shootings where
someone was either hurt or killed so far in 2018. That averages out to
about 1 incident a week, with the most recent being in Palmdale, Calif.,
earlier this week.

One person was shot in the arm, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The fact that an innocent person was shot as well as the former student
only shows that bringing guns into a gun free zone only ADDS to the
violence! If the gun free zone signs had been obeyed there would not
have been this carnage. It's obvious that the GWG story is a lie from
the NRA and only creates more terrorism. Only those people who actually
CARE and FEEL for victims can create the ideas that will put a stop to
gun violence! If you have any doubts there are many here who will
explain it all to you.
